As we move into the 2008 baseball season it is a very exciting time for all of us.  Registrations are now being accepted on-line at www.southjeff.org. Our new website is fully operational and has a lot of valuable information. Don't forget that the registration deadline is Jan 31.
Congratualations goes out to Brian Vits who has done a great job as the Chatfield Baseball director, and who has agreed to take on the role as overall Baseball Director for South Jeffco.  Mike Fray will remain with South Jeffco as the tournament coordinator.  Mike has done a fantastic job over the years growing and running our tournaments and will continue to serve in that capacity.  His knowledge and experience will continue to be a valuable asset.  He has made many improvements as our Baseball Director and we thank him for his years of service there.

Thank you,

Jeff Wahl

Rebel Fans,
We are gearing up for another Rebel season. Shaking the snow flakes off and rummaging around the equipment room for anything that will help us with indoor baseball. T’s, whiffle balls, some place to swing a bat and throw a ball. Eventually we will make it outside and begin the work that it takes to have a winning season over all the great teams in the Jeffco league. Getting knocked out of the State playoffs last year by Wheatridge only makes us work a little harder to get back to work for our 2008 season.
Our normal routine is to work out during the week, usually in the evening up in the gym and weight room at Columbine. We will have tryouts beginning February 22 which last for 5 days and begin our non league schedule in early March. We wrap up the non league schedule by taking a trip to Arizona for 4 games and then we begin our league schedule that runs through April. We are planning a Youth camp to be held February 2nd. We will announce the times in the coming future. Sign ups will be done through the South Jeffco office. I hope to see future Rebels at the camp and welcome all the kids going to other local schools as well. We will also host a coaches clinic for any of the youth coaches that would like to see some of the drills that we work on during the spring.
We will showcase a Varsity, JV and 2 level 3 teams this spring.
I hope to see everyone come out to some games this spring. Our schedule is available on the Columbine Rebel web site. If you have any questions please feel free to reach me by email ( ).
Have a great spring and good luck this season.

Dakota Ridge Baseball

by SJSA posted 12/29/2007

As many of you may have already heard, a group of people associated with Dakota Ridge High School have initiated an effort to form a new baseball association for Dakota Ridge area players, beginning with the 2008 season. This new baseball association will not be affiliated with South Jeffco Sports Association. This new Dakota Ridge Baseball Association is currently in the process of getting recognized as a member of Jefferson County Junior Baseball League (JCJBL). It is our understanding that the new association will serve ages 9-14 and the 8 year old competitive (0 league) level. As a result, South Jeffco Sports will continue to provide the Midget Baseball program for Dakota Ridge area players ages 4-8.
In order to attempt to address questions you may have regarding the status of your team and/or player/s, please see the following guidelines provided by JCJBL. This information assumes that Dakota Ridge Baseball will be granted membership in the JCJBL.
· All current South Jeffco - Dakota Ridge area teams and players in the 10-14 age groups have the option of continuing to play on either a South Jeffco baseball team or a Dakota Ridge baseball team for the upcoming season. This option also applies to individual players who have played in the South Jeffco baseball program.
· All 9 year old players from the Dakota Ridge area must tryout in the Dakota Ridge Baseball Association, with the exception of players trying out for 0 level teams. Those players are free to tryout in their area of choice.

Any South Jeffco team from last year that has an equal or greater number of South Jeffco area players (Chatfield, Columbine, Front Range), compared to Dakota Ridge players, will remain a South Jeffco team. What the team was designated last year does not matter. According to this guideline, the following area designation would apply to the teams listed.
Any 2008 Dakota Ridge team that does not return at least 6 players from their 2007 roster will be considered a new team. All the players from that 2007 team must then return and play in their home areas.
Home areas are defined as the High School area in which the player lives and goes to school. If a player lives in one High School area, but goes to school in a different area, that player may choose which of the two areas to play in.
We hope this information helps to clarify your player’s status for the upcoming season. South Jeffco Baseball is committed to working cooperatively with the new Dakota Ridge Baseball area in order to continue to provide the best possible youth sports experience for the kids of our community. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the SJSA office at 303-979-9239 or    and they have your area director contact you.

The 2008 Girls Softball season will soon be upon us. South Jeffco Rec program will field teams in 9 age groups, which are T-ball (5-7 year olds), Coach Pitch (8 year olds), 9,10,11,12,13-14,15-16,17+. The competitive program offers girls who want to compete at a higher level the chance to play at a competitive level. This program will field teams in the 5 age groups, 10UC, 12UC, 14UC, 14UB, and 16UB.
The past year South Jeffco fielded 18 teams in the Girls Softball league of the Jefferson County league. Over 300 of our girls competed with teams from Arvada, Alameda-Green Mountain, Bear Creek, Golden, Lakewood, West Jefferson County, and Wheat Ridge. Our young ladies represented South Jeffco well by displaying some of the best sportsmanship and softball in the league. We had a number of teams place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in 6 of the 8 County age group tournaments. Our competitive program teams placed well in tournaments last season as well with both 14U teams winning tournaments and the South Jeffco Diamonds placing 2nd in the USSSA State Tournament. South Jeffco teams were some of the best supported teams across the County, as families and friends came to many games to cheer on the teams.
I would like to give a big thank you to our volunteer coaches, parents, and the dedication and effort to the girls in our program for representing South Jeffco so well this past season. At South Jeffco we are proud to have the opportunity to offer girls of all skill levels a place to play softball and have fun.
Registration for the 2008 Girls Softball Rec. program will begin January 1, 2008 and continue thru February 15, 2008 (any registrations received after February 15, 2008 will require the late fee for players to be placed on a team, new or existing).
Registration will be available both online (www.southjeff.org) and walk-in. We still have openings for girls wishing to play in our competitive program as well.
The timeline of events for the 2008 softball season includes practice starting the 3rd week of April, games beginning the 3rd week of May and continuing thru the end of July. Games are played throughout the county Monday thru Friday.

Foothills Park & Recreation - an investment in a healthy communi

by SJSA posted 12/29/2007

Foothills Park & Recreation – an investment in a healthy community
Foothills Park & Recreation District is facing rising maintenance costs and budget issues and needs the involvement of all District residents to learn about how parks, facilities and programs are funded and to share that information with their friends and neighbors in the District.
Residents will be asked at the May 2008 election to increase the mill levy rate on their property taxes that helps support Foothills Park & Recreation District, the first such increase since 2001. If this mill levy increase is not approved by the voters, Foothills will be forced to take immediate steps in the summer of 2008 to eliminate some park maintenance and other programs and services.
You can help by joining Friends of Foothills, a community group formed to learn more about Foothills Park & Recreation District and to build support for its current and long-term financial goals. The next meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the Peak Community and Wellness Center, 6612 S. Ward St.
Foothills, a special district that serves some 90,000 residents in a 28 square mile area of unincorporated Jefferson County, operates Schaefer Athletic Complex, Clement Park, Easton Regional Park, Ridge Recreation Center, Edge Ice Arena, Lilley Gulch Recreation Center, Peak Community and Wellness Center, Indoor Sports Arena, Foothills Golf Course complex, Meadows Golf Course, four outdoor swimming pools and 70 park sites totaling more than 2,410 acres, including 42 neighborhood and community parks and 24 greenbelts. In addition Foothills manages six regional trail corridors for public use, which, combined with park trails, total more than 31 miles.    For more information visit www.ifoothills.org, or call (303) 409-2100.

Future Charger Baseball Stars:
Hello to all you guys in the Chatfield area getting ready for another season of South Jeffco baseball. I know it doesn’t look like very nice practice weather right now, but don’t worry. . . we’ve got a couple months to help melt the white stuff. I just wanted to wish everybody good luck on the upcoming season and tell you that all the coaches at Chatfield Senior High School are glad you’re playing America’s pastime and are really looking forward to coaching you at some point in the future. I know some of you are 14 and will be here next year, while some of you are only 8, and that some of you just made the zero league team while some of you didn’t, but the most important thing of all is that you’re all playing one of the best sports in the world: the great game of baseball. Don’t worry too much about your team’s level: our varsity high school players have played anywhere from zero to division 3 growing up, so just go out this spring and summer and have as much fun as you possibly can. Listen to your coaches, go to camps and clinics, and come by this spring to watch us play some Varsity and JV games. If you do, let us know you’re on a Chatfield Little League team and we’ll see about sneaking you on the field after the game.   It would fantastic to see you here with your teammates, coaches, and families. Just go to www.chatfieldbaseball.com to see our schedules and other information.

Also, I’d love to invite you to our Baseball Dinner on Monday January 28 in the Chatfield Senior High Commons from 5:30 to 8:00. There will fantastic food from the award winning Italian restaurant
Virgilio’s, some great entertainment, and a silent auction including bats and gloves signed by a couple guys named Matt Holiday and Troy Tulowitzki. We’d love see some future Charger baseball stars hanging out with our current high school players. Please call Bob Putka at 720 234 8489 if you’re interested in tickets.

Also, if any of you guys ever have a question about baseball or Chatfield Senior High School, feel free to email me at
. I’ll try to answer your questions as soon as possible.

Well, that’s about it. I hope your upcoming baseball season is a grand slam. And if you hit a grand slam, let me know. I’d love to hear about it.
Good luck,
Coach Yansak
